2020 Travels
Cambodia and Thailand

February 18 - March 5, 2020

Cambodia

Below: We toured Angkor Wat and several other historic temples in Cambodia. Just like Machu Picchu, you are allowed to climb all over them. Some have trees growing in them and on them - very interesting.

Below: In Phnom Penh we visited 'The Killing Fields' which was much different than most memorials. Human bones and clothes were sticking out of the ground (you could touch them), and they had a large display of skulls.

Below: We boated on the Mekong River to Silk Island. Here we saw silk worms in action, and silk weavers making scarves and sarongs. For some unknown reason they had porcupines there.

Below: Are there monkeys in Thailand? Ohhhh yes. We saw a monkey steal a bottle of soda from a tourist, open the cap and enjoy his treat. That was pretty funny.

Below: Wet markets and wet restaurants (like the one below in Phuket) are common in China and throughout Southeast Asia. It is normal and traditional to buy live animals at markets like this.

Below: The most fun thing we did in Thailand was riding, feeding and bathing elephants. We loved it!

Below: The coronavirus epidemic was ramping up in February, 2020. Tourism was way down in Southeast Asia which put many people out of work. Hotel prices dropped and tourist attractions were not crowded as usual. This played to our advantage but made us sad to see so many people adversely affected by the crisis.

One day we took a touristy 4-hour cruise down the Mekong River in Cambodia on a cruise boat that holds 300 people. There were eight staff on board and they served a delicious lunch. Jamie and I were the only passengers.

To the people of Asia: Thank you for treating us so well during your time of hardship. We learned a lot from your unselfish hospitality. Our hearts go out to you and we hope life will be restored to normal soon.
