WINNING TICKET was a promotional game issued by Humble Oil at its ESSO- and ENCO-branded gas stations in 1968. This was a collect-and-win game with instant winners. The game consisted of a game card (about 4.25" x 2.25") given to customers each time they visited a participating ESSO or ENCO gas station. There are three sections on the card which provided multiple ways to win cash and prizes. Winning Ticket built off of two previously-released Humble Oil promotional games, Tigerino (1966) and Tigerama (1967). Each Winning Ticket game card has a Tigerino section, a Tigerama section, and a sweepstakes entry form. In the Tigerino section, there is a wash-off area which, when you run water over it (or wipe it with a wet rag), reveals either an instant winner cash prize, or alphabet letters that were to be collected and combined with other cards. When a player collected two or more cards that spelled the word 'TIGER,' their cards could be redeemed for a $50.00 cash prize. In the Tigerama section, there is a wash-off area which reveals a picture of the left half or the right half of a prize. The prizes are either cash or merchandise. When you collected two cards that had both halves of the same prize, you won that prize. The sweepstakes entry form could be filled out, removed from the card, and dropped off in the 'ballot box' at a participating ESSO or ENCO gas station. Entries were drawn and prizes were awarded. There was over $3,000,000 in cash and prizes available in this game. The 'Winning Ticket' theme played off the presidential election of 1968. The Tigerino section was red and the Tigerama section was blue. The sweepstakes entry form is a ballot where you check a box, voting for either the Humble Oil tiger or the 'ad manager' who supposedly wants to fire him. The sweepstakes entry form was then deposited into a 'ballot box' at the gas station. |

Above: Two ads in the Indianapolis Recorder from August, 1968. The ad claims that this is the only game with "3 chances to win every time you play." This is not true because other games (for example, American Oil's 'Mr. & Mrs. NFL' game, and Mobil Oil's 'Strike it Clean' game) had three chances to win in each game piece. The ad shows an image of a game card which is a mock-up; the actual game cards were different than the image. No game cards have "Win Both!" printed on them. |
