Strike It Rich

Strike It Rich

STRIKE IT RICH was a promotional game issued by Pioneer Petroleum in the 1960s. This was a collect-and-win game with several different prizes available.

Everything I know about this game comes from a single match book cover (shown below). It appears that the game pieces were match books distributed at Pioneer gas stations in Canada. Printed in the match books are one of six letters that spell the word 'PIONEER.' If all the letters needed to spell the word 'PIONEER' could be collected, the player won the prize indicated in the match book.

The match book below contains the letter 'O.' I'm going to speculate that the key, prize-winning letter was 'N.' This is because, if I were creating the game, I wouldn't use 'E' as the winning letter since there are two of them, and I wouldn't use 'I,' 'P' or 'R' because of the risk of counterfeiting. Since 'O' appears in the match book below I assume it is a common letter. That leaves 'N' as the probable key. This is just a guess.

The match book is not dated but one of the prizes in the game was 'Pioneer Money' which Pioneer Petroleum used for promotions starting in the 1960s.
